Lourdes, France

1 Jun

Patrick spent first week of May in Lourdes, France with the American Order of Malta. He was one of the fortunate “malades” taken by the organization on their annual Lourdes Pilgrimage.

For those who are not familiar; Lourdes, France is where the Immaculate Virgin appeared to a peasant teenage girl named Bernadette Soubirous, also known as Saint Bernadette, in 1858.

The Marian Apparition at Lourdes is one of the few that has been approved by the Vatican. Lourdes is one of the most visited pilgrimage site in the world. This little town in the Pyrenees region of France gets more than 5 million a year. At the Grotto of Massabielle, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette eighteen times from the first apparition in February 11, 1858 and last apparition in July 16, 1858.

During the apparition, Bernadette dug up a hole and water spring appeared out of nowhere. Until now, no one has been able to determine where the water is originating from. The water from the spring is said to be miraculous and has healing power. There have been 67 known cases of miraculous cured recognized by the Vatican since. There are countless others which are subject to anyone’s interpretation.

It is a question of how much faith you have. There is a miraculous power in faith and prayers.

Every year around the first week of May, the knights and dames of the Order of Malta, with their auxiliaries and volunteers can be seen in Lourdes, France pulling a cart or pushing a wheelchair to bring their malades to the grotto where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette.

There are massive gatherings for benediction, adoration and religious mass. Every night, there is a candle light procession attended by thousands from around the world.

There are long lines to touch the stones from the grotto to be in same presence with the mother of God. There are lines to drink the water from the spring. There are even longer lines to take a bath in the famous spring. It is a transformational, spiritual journey that anyone who has been there can attest to.
In Lourdes, France you will witness compassion and love of humanity and life in its finest.

Chivalry is not dead. The knights and dames of the Order of Malta exemplify that there is something noble in service, in helping someone in need. In the eyes of God we are all equal. What better example of that than Saint Bernadette.

7th Annual Walk & 5k Run For Wishes

Dear Friends:

Make-A-Wish® Hudson Valley’s “2012 Walk & 5K Run For Wishes” event is taking place on Sunday, November 4th, and you have the power to help make wishes come true for children in the community! Hundreds of walkers and runners, including me, will be coming together, at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown Heights, NY, in an effort to raise money for the Hudson Valley Chapter.

Make-A-Wish® Hudson Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Chapter serves eight New York counties including Delaware, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester. All proceeds from the “2012 Walk & 5K Run for Wishes” will provide the resources necessary to ensure that no medically-eligible child in the Hudson Valley goes without a wish.

I am participating as a walker/runner and I am asking you today to join me on this journey. There are several ways you can become involved. You can join my team and become a walker/runner yourself by simply clicking on the link below. If you are unable to participate as a walker but still believe strongly, as I do, about the “Power of a Wish” you can also follow the link below to donate money toward my overall team goal.

Click here to join Team Patrick Lindo or make a general donation.

Please know that through your participation you can make a significant difference in the life of a child with a life-threatening medical condition. Granting a child’s wish provides a time of normalcy and a “time out” from the rigors of difficult medical protocols. Your participation will support the power of what a wish can do – for the children and for their families.

The Christian and Suffering

9 Mar

The following is a reprint of Archbishop Dermont Ryan article in The Christian Journey.

This article is included in the Sunday, March 4th Church of  Saint Anthony in Yonkers Bulletin.

The Christian and Suffering

For the Christian, no situation is hopeless.

Through suffering, we can learn to trust in God.

The Eucharist is a pledge of our hope.

“Faced with suffering in our lives, we tend to ask ‘why me?’ The answer to that question is hidden in the infinite mind of God; it will be made clear in Heaven. The more practical question is ‘how can I live through this suffering without losing hope?’, ‘how can I trust even though I am sorely afflicted?’ (Psalm).

For the Christian, no situation, however frightening or depressing, is hopeless. Since God has given His Son to die for us, we know that He is with us and will give us all things with His Son (2ndReading).

We find it hard to grasp and to live by that truth. Even the Apostles, who were shown the power and the glory of God (Gospel) and who were taught that the Christ must suffer and so come to the glory of the Resurrection (Preface), denied andabandoned the Lord when faced with the scandal of His Passion. Only later did they fully understand what the rising from the dead meant (Gospel).

Suffering is permitted by God not in order to make life difficult, but in order to teach us that His ways are beyond ours. If our lives were to work out exactly as we wished, they would lead only to the goals we chose. God is calling us to a destiny which is beyond our power to imagine. Abraham learns that his hope of being the father of a great nation is dependent not on the ordinary expectation of seeing his son’s sons, but on the power of God which is not confined by human plans but which infinitely exceeds them (1st Reading).

In the Mass, we bring our whole lives, with all our joys and sorrows, to offer them as spiritual sacrifices to the Father; the Passion and Death of Christ are made present to us; we receive Him, risen from the dead, victorious over death and suffering, calling us to share in that risen life. ‘His sufferings are remembered, our minds are filled with grace, and we receive a pledge of the glory that is to be ours’.”

A Million Reasons to Believe

29 Nov

Macy’s is hosting a Believe Campaign to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation from November 7th 2011 – December 24th 2011. For each letter stamped and addressed to Santa At the North Pole and drop off at Macy’s Santa Mail letterbox located in every Macy’s store, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make A Wish Foundation.

Please help with this inspiring idea and help make wish come true.

See details below…

Complete with in-store “Believe Stations” and a devoted TV ad, Believe captures the heart of the holiday with a season-long effort that elevates the message of goodwill and generosity through an uplifting campaign to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Believe Stations will be located in every store and will feature:

  • Believe Meter
  • Letter-writing station
  • Official R.H. Macy Santa Mail letterbox
  • NEW augmented reality component (enables people to take virtual photos on their phone with animated characters from the Macy’s-produced holiday special “Yes, Virginia” and upload/print them as holiday cards. A Facebook component will be incorporated, as well)

From November 6 through December 24, everyone across the country is invited to drop off letters – stamped and addressed to Santa At The North Pole – at Macy’s Santa Mail letterbox. For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation up to $1 million.

Believe was inspired by the letter to the editor written by eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon in 1897 asking if there is a Santa Claus. Newsman Francis P. Church responded with a poignantly worded essay on the importance of believing, including the famous line

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist…”
